The Cathedral (Duomo)

The Duomo Cathedral of Milan, bearing the name of Santa Maria Nascente. This Gothic Church was built for nearly six centuries, and today is the fifth largest Cathedral in the world and the largest in Italy. The Duomo is located on the place where once was the center of the Roman Mediolanum, – this is confirmed by the fact that modern streets either radiate from the Cathedral or surround it. Under the building of the Duomo you can see the early Christian baptistery, built in 335, the year, is one of the oldest Christian baptistery in Europe.

In 1386, the year Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo began construction of the Cathedral, which coincided with the coming to power in Milan of Gian Galeazzo Visconti. The first architect was appointed Simone da Orsenigo, which planned to build the Cathedral in Lombard Gothic style. However, Visconti wanted to follow the fashion trends of European architecture, and therefore invited the French engineer Nicolas de Bonaventure, who added the style “rayonnant Gothic” – French style, not common in Italy. He also decided that the brick structure should be marble. In 1402, the year Jan, Galeazzo died – by this time the Cathedral was only half completed, and construction was frozen nearly to the end of the century. Continue reading

The megaliths of Donbass – the legacy of ancient Hyperborea?

In the vicinity of the village Donskoye of Volnovakha district – unsightly rocky soil, where the surface of granite rocks. And yet there is a lot of randomly placed rock formations. This lost in Donetsk steppes area, which is the ordinary name of Lososina beam, is part of the ancient Hyperborea. So says a resident of the village don Alexander Shulga is associate Professor in the Department of criminal law disciplines Donetsk law Institute MIA of Ukraine, candidate of legal Sciences, and “part-time” – an Amateur archaeologist, who along with his son Artem proceeded several miles of steppes in search of the homeland of civilization.

While such studies of Amateur archaeologists discovered dozens of artifacts that, in their opinion, indicate that the ancient civilization of Hyperborea was located on the territory of modern Donbass. Continue reading

Gothic style

Gothic (from the name of the Germanic tribe is ready) style (1150-1500) is represented in various art forms. But it is most fully manifested in the architecture: One of the highest achievements of the Gothic style — the Gothic cathedrals. Powerful columns crowned with pointed arches, huge Windows with colored glass, conical spires of Gothic cathedrals give ease. The building always looks tall and seems even taller.

The exterior is decorated with sculptures, a huge number of columns, which create the impression of lightness and at the same time give the building the necessary strength. The lack of smooth walls especially when compared with buildings of the Romanesque style.

The portal (entrance) to the Cathedral are always decorated with numerous arches, sculptures, turrets, small Windows curly. Smooth walls a little, usually they cut large Windows-sockets. The faces and postures of the figures emphasized realistic, even the folds of the clothes are not frozen, but soft, movable. Continue reading
