During the excavations discovered one of the main fortifications of ancient Chernihiv
One of the main fortifications of ancient Chernihiv — the moat surrounding castle — discovered by archaeologists during excavations on the corner of Kirponos and the Black Prince in the regional center.
As the correspondent of UKRINFORM research fellow of the Institute of archaeology of NASU, candidate of historical Sciences Elena Chernenko, the existence of this ditch and its approximate location, the archaeologists have known for a long time. He was marked on maps of Chernihiv of the eighteenth century, since then still stood open. In 1803, during the General redevelopment of the city moat was filled in. Then it was razed to the ground and other defense facilities of the Chernihiv fortress: the moat that surrounded Detinet, and the ancient ramparts.
During excavations in the 70-80-ies of the last century archaeologists sometimes encountered on the edge of the ditch of Okolny castle, but to open it to full width and to explore properly managed for the first time.
“Thanks to the information obtained during the excavations, we can conclude that this moat was built in the tenth century, — says Elena Chernenko. — Its width exceeds 20 m, depth — 8 m and even a little bit more in the Central part. A moat was built around the time that both the fortifications Chernihiv fortress — Detinets, which at that time reached a maximum area of 16 hectares. All this suggests that already in the tenth century, before the advent of the first known Chronicles Chernihiv Prince Mstyslav, Chernihiv was one of the largest cities of Eastern Europe and the area may exceed the then Kiev.”
Seen in the large-scale and difficult excavations allowed the archaeologists to draw conclusions about the design of the Roundabout moat of the castle, its form, stages of use, and the like. So, for example, from the settled parts of the city the town ditch was sketchy slopes, and propped up their high (up to 6 m) vertical reinforced wooden wall. Ran the ditch, most likely parallel to the walls of the fortress from Eletsky monastery to the river Strizhen.
In the nineteenth century over the backfilled moat stood a capital brick house. During the Second world war, they were destroyed by bombs, and today the earthen layers have only their foundations. On the penultimate day of work, the archaeologists were lucky to find buried in the basement of this house hidden in the years of the revolution valuable pocket watch on a chain with a medallion. They are well preserved because they were wrapped in cloth and a piece of leather. Nakhodka transferred to the collections of the National historical and cultural reserve “Ancient Chernihiv”.
