Among the Gothic churches of France the Cathedral of Notre Dame stands out austere grandeur of its appearance. Depending on the time of day and weather its silhouette is painted in various tones of grey from steel to smoke. In beauty, proportions, the degree of realization of the idea of Gothic art, the Cathedral of Notre Dame is an absolutely unique phenomenon. Today, looking at its holistic and harmonious ensemble, it is impossible to believe that the temple was built almost two hundred years, he repeatedly reworked and capital was restored.
The construction of the Cathedral began in 1163 in Paris Bishop Maurice de Sully. The first stone in its Foundation was laid by Pope Alexander III. In the construction process, which ended only in the mid XIV century, the original plan of the Cathedral has undergone several changes, taking the Mature Gothic art. Continue reading
This was the first trip taken by the author. The group in addition to the author, while the fourth-year student of geological faculty of Moscow state pedagogical University, was already a well-known traveller in South America, Anatoliy Khizhnyak, mountaineer, conqueror of Dombai Alexander Polyakov, inquisitive student Alex Avilov and erudite biologist Dmitry Usov. We were all ready for the most risky adventures. Decorated with our male friends the girl Tatyana, the employee of the Main Botanical garden of RAS. Learning about the possibility to collect seeds of rare plants on an isolated plateau, brave girl-nerd without hesitation joined our team and passed all three weeks of hard marching.

We went in early April when in those places still blowing cold winds and night-time temperatures drop below zero, so we stocked up on warm clothes, which is very useful.

Because on the last day before leaving to go skiing I couldn’t because of an injured leg, and until evening we had to do something, I decided to go to t the th writecheck the capital of Transylvania – Brasov, located in 12 kilometers from Poiana Brasov, and slowly, literally on one leg to read it. In the old days the town was known as Brasco, Brasso, Stephanopolis, Kronstadt, and from 1950 to 1960 was called Orasul Stalin (in honor of Joseph Stalin). Today Brasov is often referred to as the Romanian Salzburg, because the appearance of the old part of the city fancy mixed Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and late style of national romanticism.
Pjaca Sfatului, or Council house, is the oldest and the most famous square of Brasov, where there is a large number of medieval buildings, historical and architectural monuments of different times – from the 14th to the 19th century. In the middle of Place Sfatului is a former city Council with a peaked tower of the 15th century, inside which houses the historical Museum. Continue reading
